Port of Tallinn Operating Principles Pertaining to Environmental Management:

We ensure that the ecological footprint of our activities is kept to a minimum and strive for climate neutrality;
To operate in environmentally friendly ways pursuant to the environmental pollution prevention principle;
To assess all environmental impacts when planning development activities;
To take into consideration the public opinion and the suggestions made by our clients and customers in making decisions, also following the principles of continuous improvement and sustainable use of natural resources;
To comply with Estonian, European Union, European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and international environmental legislation and guidelines;
To achieve our environmental policy and objectives, we raise environmental awareness of our employees, cooperate with Estonian and international organisations, scientific establishments and research institutions and consultation companies.

In accordance with its environmental policies, goals and responsibilities, the Port of Tallinn has defined its actions associated with significant environmental aspects.

Based on the operations of Port of Tallinn, the environmental policies are divided into two groups:

1) environmental aspects related to the activities of the Port of Tallinn (including the organisation of shipping traffic as well as the environmental aspects pertaining to the land-based activities;
2) environmental aspects pertaining to the activities of the lessees (operating companies).

All identified environmental aspects and impacts will be assessed based on their impact and frequency by using the matrix method and the relevant significance will be determined.

The aspects scoring higher than the agreed limit will be deemed significant and for these the Port of Tallinn has either established an applicable internal procedure or has taken these into account in identifying the objectives of quality management and environmental management systems.

With the environmental requirements becoming stricter and the public awareness in environmental issues increasing, enterprises and organisations are more and more forced to direct their attention, in addition to their financial performance indicators, to the improvement of environmental management. One of the major environmental objectives for the Port of Tallinn is the improvement of air quality. In co-operation with the oil terminal operators of the Muuga Harbour, the Environmental Board, and the Environmental Inspectorate, a management system for air pollution monitoring and actions for pollution reduction were developed.

Port of Tallinn is a founding member of the Estonian Association for Environmental Management, a member of the European prestigious inter-port environmental protection organisation Ecoports, and a supporting member of the world ports climate initiative C40 World Ports Climate Declaration.

The EcoPorts membership indicates that the environmental activities of the Port of Tallinn are in compliance with the international requirements – the company audits the environmental aspects related to its activities in order to reduce the impact on natural environment.

Pursuant to the large scale development projects of the Port of Tallinn, the activities pertaining to environmental protection have become increasingly more important.
